Top Tips

1) Great (shoot)outdoors

An incident early yesterday morning at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming left one dead and a park ranger injured.

  • What happened: Rangers received a report that an armed person was making threats in Yellowstone's Canyon Village area, which contains camping facilities as well as cabins and lodges, but is not a heavy tourist area. Gunfire broke out when rangers made contact with the person.

  • The fallout: A ranger was shot, but officials said they were in stable condition after being taken to a nearby hospital. The person with the gun was killed; the National Park Service did not release their identity.

  • Big picture: The FBI is leading the investigation into the incident and the NPS said there is no active threat to the public. There have only been 43 homicides at all national parks in the last 17 years.

2) Early lid

President Joe Biden plans to stop working late as his embattled re-election campaign faces a major primetime test.

  • High stakes: ABC News' George Stephanopoulos will interview Biden today. The interview will be taped in Wisconsin and shown in full at 8 p.m. ET. It is Biden's first major interview since his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump last week.

  • More shuteye: Biden told Democratic governors he received a medical checkup after the debate and was fine. He also told them he needs more sleep and plans to stop scheduling events after 8 p.m. to get more rest. The comments came after he suggested his poor showing against Trump was due to jet lag.

  • Big picture: The governors voiced support for Biden following their meeting, and the president has remained resolute he will stay in the race. But Biden's polling has continued to sag following the debate and calls for his exit continue. The interview with ABC is the next big test for his viability atop the Democratic ticket.

3) Red wave

The Labour Party will return to power in the United Kingdom after 14 years in opposition.

  • What happened: Exit polls projected Labour would win 410 seats in the House of Commons, delivering the landslide romp many expected when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called for a snap election. Labour only needed 326 for a majority. Sunak's Conservative Party was expected to win 131 seats, followed by the Liberal Democrats with 61.

  • Changing of the guard: Labour Leader Keir Starmer will become Prime Minister today once he gets King Charles' ceremonial blessing to form a government, the first led by Labour since 2010. Sunak is expected to resign as Tory leader following the wipeout, but stay on until a new leader is selected.

  • Surprise statement: Reform UK -- the upstart right-wing party helmed by Brexiteer Nigel Farage -- was projected to capture 13 seats. Farage, who has a well-documented friendship with Trump, will enter Parliament for the first time in his polarizing political career. The big question now: Will Farage try to replace the Conservative Party with his own, or attempt a merger and takeover?
