Top Tips

1) Hot spring summer

Some visitors at Yellowstone National Park caught an unexpected show.

  • What happened: There was a surprise eruption yesterday in Biscuit Basin, which sits a few miles north of Old Faithful Geyser. The hydrothermal explosion sent dirt, rock, steam and water shooting out of the ground and into the sky, likely after water quickly switched to steam and expanded.

  • Minimal damage: Videos taken at the time of the eruption indicate several dozen parkgoers were in the vicinity, but no one was injured. The boardwalk built to protect people from the dangerous and fragile grounds was damaged. The National Park Service closed the area due to safety concerns after the explosion.

  • Big picture: Yellowstone and U.S. Geological Survey officials stressed the explosion does not indicate a volcanic eruption is imminent. While these incidents are rare, they are not unprecedented. Yellowstone saw similar events in 1989 and 2009 and had a smaller one earlier this year.

2) Hit the road

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following her disastrous public hearing while alarming new information about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was revealed.

  • Stepping down: Cheatle was initially defiant in the face of immense bipartisan pressure, but she gave in yesterday amid growing outrage. Deputy Director Ronald Rowe Jr. will be the acting director; President Joe Biden said he plans to appoint a new permanent leader soon. Lawmakers have begun work on a bill that would make the USSS director role one that requires Senate approval.

  • The latest: Pennsylvania's top cop told the House Homeland Security Committee that two local officers left a position with a sightline on gunman Thomas Crooks' perch to search for the 20-year-old after he was identified as a suspicious individual. State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris also confirmed Crooks fired eight shots and said a local cop's confrontation with Crooks happened minutes, and not seconds, before he fired on Trump. Paris said the USSS was informed of on-site reports about Crooks before the shooting.

  • Next steps: FBI Director Christopher Wray will deliver testimony before the House Judiciary Committee today (it was scheduled prior to the incident). Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will create a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt. The USSS reportedly asked Trump to stop holding outdoor rallies.

3) Unexpected undercard

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of (a rather preoccupied) Congress.

  • The speech: Netanyahu will aim to reassert his domestic leadership and reemphasize Israeli's ties to the U.S. as the war against Hamas in Gaza heads toward its 10th month. Capitol Hill will be largely shuttered today in anticipation of mass protests; many Democrats will boycott the address.

  • Strange timing: The prospect of a Netanyahu visit has been controversial for months. But its potency is greatly diminished following the double-whammy of the assassination attempt on former President Trump and President Biden's decision to stand down for Vice President Kamala Harris. The war, and the Biden Administration's support, still drive internal strife inside the Democratic Party.

  • Meetings and calls: Netanyahu will have private meetings with Biden, Harris and lawmakers during his visit. He is also expected to trek to Mar-a-Lago and sit down with Trump, who has been critical of Israel's war approach at times and had a falling-out with Netanyahu after the 2020 election.

  • Record breaker: This will be Netanyahu's fourth time addressing a joint session, pushing him past late former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill for the most by a foreign leader.
