Dozens of people were killed when the roof of a famed venue in the Dominican Republic collapsed.
The news: At least 79 people died in the accident at Jet Set Club in the capital city of Santo Domingo. There were at least 160 people injured when the building's roof caved in during a meringue concert; the cause of the disaster has not been determined. The club is popular among athletes, celebrities and politicians.
More details: Hundreds of people were inside the club. Rescue crews said they were searching the rubble and expressed optimism they would find survivors. But officials fear the death toll will rise.
Notable names: Octavio Dotel -- who pitched for 13 Major League teams, the second-most in baseball history -- was among those killed. Ex-big leaguer Tony Blanco and Nelsy Cruz, a provincial governor and the sister of former All-Star Nelson Cruz, also died. Singer Rubby Perez, who was performing, was said to be missing.
