Top Tips

1) Expansion team

Earth may soon have a new country.

  • The news: Albania announced plans to create a sovereign microstate for the Bektashi Muslims, an Islamic Sufi order based in the capital city of Tirana. The Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order would be the 196th country in the world and its smallest state. It would be about a quarter of the size of the Vatican City.

  • The reasons: Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the new state would promote peaceful coexistence and tolerance. There would be no dress or lifestyle laws and alcohol would be permitted, reflecting the Bektashi's tolerant approach. The new state would have its own administration, borders and passports.

  • Big picture: Albania is a NATO member and is considered one of the more diverse and tolerant members of Eastern Europe and the Balkan region. Mother Teresa was born there and the country sheltered Jewish refugees during the Holocaust and more recently Afghans after the Taliban returned to power. Receiving recognition from the United Nations and other allies would be critical to the viability of the microstate.

2) Tick dock

It is getting late early out there.

  • The news: There is less than week to go until roughly 45K dockworkers at several dozen seaports on the East and Gulf Coasts are expected to go on strike. The International Longshoremen's Association's existing contract expires on Sept. 30 at midnight; a work stoppage would begin Oct. 1.

  • The impact: A strike would immediately shut down almost half of U.S. imports delivered by sea. While industries have been rushing shipments in to prepare for a work stoppage, experts have projected even a brief strike will significantly impact supply chains.

  • Big picture: The Department of Labor has reportedly engaged the United States Maritime Alliance. President Joe Biden previously indicated he would not block a strike, despite pleas from importers. But the fact his administration is intervening suggests the White House will work to secure a last-minute deal.

3) Chilling words

Federal prosecutors said an alleged would-be assassin laid out his plan to kill former President Donald Trump.

  • The news: Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, wrote a letter declaring his intent to assassinate Trump months before he was spotted with a high-powered rifle near the former president as he played golf at one of his Florida properties. The note was key to the Department of Justice's successful argument to detain Routh ahead of trial, as was evidence suggesting he was stalking Trump.

  • Next steps: DOJ plans to try to charge Routh, who was stopped by the Secret Service, with the attempted assassination of a political figure. He already faces firearms charges. The letter could be key as Routh allegedly spent hours in the woods near West Palm Beach's Trump International Golf Club while Trump's presence was never publicly reported prior to the incident.

  • Coming up: Trump will reportedly hold an Oct. 5 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, at the site of the first assassination attempt against him. He was shot in the ear during that July 13 event when alleged shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks killed one attendee and wounded two others before being neutralized. The setup for the October rally is expected to be similar to the one in July.
