The Top Tip

Blurred lines

The Texas Legislature will consider a big ask from President Donald Trump starting today.

  • The news: Trump has called on Republicans to redraw the Lone Star State's congressional districts ahead of next year's midterm elections. The president reportedly wants them to implement a map that would likely give the GOP an additional five House seats in the state, a major boost for the party's hopes to retain control of the chamber in 2026.

  • Next steps: The matter will be one of several issues on the table during the legislature's special session. Texas Democrats have limited options to try to thwart the new districts; some could try to flee the state in order to prevent a quorum.

  • Key context: All states redraw congressional lines every 10 years after the census. Changes typically only occur between censuses when the lines are illegal or unconstitutional -- which Texas Republicans and the Trump Administration will claim.

  • Big picture: Democrats have said they will try to redraw congressional lines in blue states -- California, New Jersey and New York have been mentioned -- in a tit-for-tat move. But some states -- NJ is one -- have laws that could hinder such retaliation.
