Horror At KC Chiefs' Parade

Your unbiased daily news brief

Good morning and happy Thursday. Fra Mauro was a 15th-century monk who lived in modern-day Italy and, somehow, drew a stunningly accurate world map despite never leaving the Venetian Lagoon. America is not on it -- Christopher Columbus' arrival was still a few decades away -- but a correctly drawn Africa is, as well as the first instance of Japan appearing on a Western map. Historians believe Marco Polo's writings guided the monk. Have a great day!

Top Tips

1) Shooting in KC

A woman was killed and almost two dozen people were injured after a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' championship parade.

  • What happened: Police said the shooting occurred at Union Station near the end of the parade honoring the Super Bowl LVIII winners. Twenty-two people were shot; nine were children. Seven victims were reported with life-threatening injuries and one person died.

  • Arrests made: Three suspects were detained after the shooting; firearms were recovered from the scene. Police said they did not have a motive. A social media video showed parade goers tackling a person, but cops did not know if that person was one of the apprehended suspects.

  • Chiefs OK: The team said all coaches, players, staff and their families were accounted for. Some players were on stage at the celebration when the shooting began. "We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence," the team said in a statement.

2) Red scare

Concerns about a significant national security threat sent Capitol Hill into a panic.

  • What happened: Ohio Rep. Mike Turner, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, released a statement calling on President Joe Biden to declassify information about "a serious national security threat." National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Turner's message surprised him but declined to discuss the matter, further igniting the firestorm.

  • The issue: Turner was reportedly referring to intelligence suggesting Russia is developing a nuclear anti-satellite system it could deploy in space. But the intelligence is not new, there is no imminent threat and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said Americans should not be alarmed.

  • Big picture: Sullivan will brief the four House members in the Gang of Eight today. Turner, who supports additional military aid to Ukraine, may have been trying to force Johnson's hand on allowing a vote on the Senate's $95B foreign aid bill.

3) Polar problem

Polar bears are not adapting well to climate change, sparking starvation and survival fears.

  • The issue: Scientists had hypothesized polar bears would adjust to living with less sea ice in their habitats and behave more like their grizzly bear relatives, taking long rest periods and diversifying their diets. But a new report suggests otherwise.

  • The study: Twenty bears were monitored for three summer weeks in Canada's Hudson Bay, just south of the Arctic Circle. The animals tried to change their lifestyle to account for environmental changes, but still lost about two pounds a day in the timeframe, according to research in Nature Communications.

  • Big picture: Polar bears will fight to thrive without sea ice, but their success will be difficult. Warmer temperatures are an even greater threat to the species than initially believed.
