Top Tips

1) Under arrest

Sean "Diddy" Combs was taken into custody by federal police last night in New York City.

  • The news: Homeland Security Investigations officers reportedly collared the hip-hop mogul after a federal grand jury handed down an indictment. The charges remained sealed as of late last night.

  • Catching up: Combs has been under federal sex trafficking investigation for about a year following allegations made in a slew of lawsuits. His Los Angeles and Miami homes were raided earlier this year by the FBI. He has denied all wrongdoing.

  • Big picture: The arrest comes days after Combs was hit with a $100M default judgment in a lawsuit filed by a Michigan inmate; he is contesting the decision. Combs' attorney said he is "an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal" and said his client had been in New York awaiting the indictment.

2) 'More help'

President Joe Biden called on Congress to take action to help the Secret Service in the wake of a second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

  • The news: Biden said the agency "needs more help" and called on legislators to "respond to their need," echoing a reported request his administration made last month. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson recently said he does not believe the agency has a staffing issue.

  • New developments: Investigators said the suspect in Sunday's alleged attempt on Trump's life spent 12 hours in the bushes outside Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. But the former president's round of golf was not planned until earlier that day and was not disclosed publicly. Trump was nearby, but playing a different hole when a USSS agent noticed a rifle in a fence and opened fire; no shots were fired at Trump.

  • Big picture: The response to the USSS role in this latest incident has been mixed. Some, including Trump, have praised agents for their efforts. Others have criticized the agency for failing to secure the area before the former president was in the vicinity. Acting Director Ronald Rowe has called for a "paradigm shift" in how presidents are protected.

3) Swiss missed

An Olympian is continuing her fight to reclaim her medal.

  • The news: Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles has filed an appeal to Switzerland's Supreme Court after she was stripped of a bronze medal following the completion of the Paris Games. That decision was made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is based in the country.

  • Catch up: Chiles won an individual bronze, but it was taken from her after Romania challenged the decision to revise her final score in floor exercise and CAS ruled in its favor. The medal was then given to Romania's Ana Barbosu; Chiles also won a gold medal in the team competition.

  • Big picture: The entire process has been plagued by reported mistakes and questionable decisions. Chiles' attorneys allege the CAS ruling was "fundamentally unfair" and that Chiles' "right to be heard" was denied, among other issues.
