Democrats and Republicans are both considering party conventions ahead of next fall's midterm elections.
What happened: Axios reported Democrats were contemplating a mini-convention in 2026 to showcase the party's candidates and rising stars. President Donald Trump then announced he may recommend a GOP national convention before the midterms.
Go deeper: Democrats held midterm conventions -- before and after the vote -- decades ago. Reporting indicates the party's early talks did not envision the sort of full-fledged convention the president appears to be hinting at. Trump boasted the GOP has never done what he may suggest.
Big picture: Democrats are seeking energy and momentum as they face an uphill battle next fall. The Cook Political Report's current analysis favors the GOP to hold both chambers and potentially add to its Senate majority.
