Top Tips

1) Left in space

This is one heck of a flight delay.

  • The news: NASA announced the first crewed Boeing Starliner mission's return to Earth will be postponed yet again. Two astronauts were scheduled to come home on the capsule on Wednesday, but they will now remain at the International Space Station until at least July 2 due to issues with their vehicle.

  • Catch up: The mission took off on June 5 after several scrubbed attempts. The astronauts were supposed to be at the ISS for a week. But helium leaks and thruster issues were detected. NASA has now pushed back the Starliner departure three times.

  • Big picture: NASA said the repeated mission extensions are not a cause for concern; while it and Boeing are working to address the issues, the aircraft is safe and performing well in orbit and there are ample supplies available for the astronauts. The delays are also designed to accommodate other ISS missions. But they come as Boeing is embattled with airplane safety issues and working to avoid criminal charges.

2) Smoke out

Deadly wildfires in New Mexico have become the subject of a federal investigation.

  • The news: FBI officials announced they believe arsonists started the recent Salt and South Fork Fires in the state. The agency is offering rewards of up to $10K for information that leads to arrests and convictions of the person or people responsible for igniting the blazes.

  • Catch up: Both fires began June 17 near the village of Ruidoso. An estimated 1.4K structures have been damaged or destroyed and two people have been killed. Utility lines have been impacted and recent rains have caused flooding in burn scars. Thousands of evacuated residents will be able to return home starting today, but officials do not expect to contain the fires for at least three more weeks.

  • Big picture: While rains in recent days have helped firefighters, the U.S. Southwest has been hit by droughts this year, leading to dry and hot conditions. Over 3.3K square miles nationwide have been impacted by wildfires this year, which is above the 10-year average.

3) Bite back

Researchers in Japan believe they may have achieved a miraculous dental breakthrough.

  • The news: A human clinical trial to test a drug that may spur tooth regrowth will begin this fall. Scientists at Kyoto University Hospital will work with 30 men ages 30-64 who are missing at least one molar after tests on ferrets and mice have worked with no major side effects.

  • The concept: Teeth are similar to bones, but they cannot regenerate. Researchers believe an antibody -- uterine sensitization-associated gene-1 protein -- blocks tooth regrowth. The trial aims to suppress USAG-1 with intravenous treatments and keep it from interacting with molecules that can spur growth.

  • Next steps: The trial will run for 11 months. If successful, it will expand to younger patients as well as other people who have lost teeth. Scientists hope to have the drug commercially available by 2030. Initial trials will be conducted among people with congenital dental issues, but researchers believe the drug could eventually treat any person who loses a tooth, regardless of reason.
