The Top Tip

Capitol crucible

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders will make their case to President Donald Trump today following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.

  • The news: Zelensky and Trump will sit down at the White House. They will then be joined by a slew of NATO and European Union heavyweights — French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

  • State of play: Trump renewed concerns he is sympathetic to Putin’s cause following their warm meeting in Alaska. He has dropped his push for a ceasefire — which Ukraine and Europe wants — and is now agreeing with Putin the focus should be a quick peace deal. Trump has also said Ukraine will need to cede some of its sovereign territory to end the war, but has said he supports security guarantees for post-war Ukraine.

  • Wild card: Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to Russia, claims Putin has agreed to European nations (and potentially the U.S.) to provide security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5, but outside the bloc.

  • Potential endgame: Zelensky said he will not cede any Ukrainian territory that Russia is not currently occupying, suggesting Kiev will accept freezing the front lines as a path to end the war.
