Top Tips

1) Border battle

The murder of a Georgia college student has become the nation's latest immigration flashpoint.

  • What happened: Laken Riley, 22, was killed while jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan man who entered the country illegally and had several prior run-ins with law enforcement, has been charged with her killing.

  • The response: Former President Donald Trump, the likely GOP nominee, blamed President Joe Biden's border policies while House Republicans have demanded information on Ibarra from the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats say Trump and Republicans have obstructed immigration reforms for political purposes.

  • Big picture: Border security and immigration may be the defining issue of the 2024 election, as evidenced by Biden and Trump making separate visits to the southern border in Texas tomorrow.

2) Time is (more) money

A fast-food chain will take a page from ride-share apps' playbook next year.

  • The plan: Wendy's will experiment with surge pricing in 2025. The cost of its offerings will fluctuate throughout the day based on demand. The chain is investing $20M to install digital menus nationwide to accommodate the plan.

  • New frontier: Variable pricing is not a new concept; Uber, Lyft, airlines and hotels are among the well-known examples. But its application in the restaurant industry -- which has struggled to bounce back from the pandemic -- has been limited.

  • Big picture: If Wendy's succeeds, it could become a trend-setter. Diners are used to discount periods like happy hours; surge pricing is the opposite. And restaurants have already successfully grown weekday business by hiking weekend prices.

3) Crossed wires

stunning claim by French President Emmanuel Macron left NATO members scrambling.

  • What happened: Macron suggested the alliance could send troops into Ukraine after hosting a summit of Western leaders. The bloc has supported the Ukrainians in their war with Russia, but direct involvement has been considered a red line.

  • The response: The Kremlin warned a Russia-NATO conflict would be inevitable if Western troops made such a move. The U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, Poland and other alliance members quickly distanced themselves from Macron's comments.

  • The fallout: The French walked back Macron's comments, which were framed as an effort for "strategic ambiguity." Officials said Macron only wanted to stimulate debate and any NATO involvement would be in non-combat capacities.
