Plot twist

The late inspiration for a Hollywood movie franchise may have killed his wife.

  • What happened: Officials in Tennessee announced they would charge deceased McNair County Sheriff Buford Pusser with murder if he were still alive. They believe he is responsible for the 1967 slaying of Pauline Pusser and she did not die during an unsolved ambush attack that targeted him.

  • Of note: The Walking Tall movies -- the 1973 original and a 2004 remake -- are based on Pusser and his wife's death.

  • The incident: Pusser claimed his wife accompanied him to a meeting with an unknown person when a car opened fire on his vehicle, killing his wife and wounding him. He denied having any involvement while alive.

  • New findings: Tennessee's Bureau of Investigation reenacted the shooting and examined forensic, medical and physical evidence. Officials believe Pusser killed his wife outside of their car and then staged the drive-by, purposely shooting himself inside his cheek.

  • The reaction: Pusser's family criticized the claims by law enforcement. Tennessee officials said they are seeking the truth and justice for Pauline Pusser.
