Top Tips
1) Tough to crack
No one knows who stole 100K eggs in Pennsylvania.
What happened: The eggs were lifted from a distribution truck's trailer last Saturday night in Antrim Township, which sits in the central part of the state near the Maryland border, roughly an hour from Harrisburg and about 90 minutes from Baltimore. The stolen product was worth about $40K.
The latest: Pennsylvania State Police conceded they have no leads or motive almost a week after the incident — a rarity for a crime of such magnitude. Cops are studying surveillance footage and following up with potential witnesses as their investigation continues.
Key context: Egg prices have skyrocketed nationally due to bird flu outbreaks and other market forces. The average cost for a dozen eggs hit over $4 in December and is expected to jump 20% this year. The distribution company said it works with over 200 independent family farms across the country.
2) Playing political games
President Donald Trump returned to the culture war with his latest executive order.
The news: Trump signed the "No Men in Women's Sports Executive Order" to set a national ban on transgender athletes who were born male from competing in women's sports. Trump followed through on a frequent campaign pledge, signing the EO yesterday on National Girls & Women in Sports Day; the EO will likely face legal challenges.
The mechanism: Trump's EO rolls back the Biden Administration's guidance on Title IX regarding transgender rights and prohibits students assigned male at birth from participating in girls' and women's sports and using women's restrooms at any school that receives federal funding; Trump said non-compliance could jeopardize that support; the impacted athletes would be allowed to compete on co-ed or men's teams.
Next step: Trump said he plans to pressure the International Olympic Committee to establish similar standards. The EO also suggests the U.S. could deny transgender female athletes from entering the country for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
Big picture: Trump claimed "the war on women's sports is over," echoing the argument transgender female athletes have unfair biological advantages. Trans-rights advocates blasted the order. It is Trump's fourth EO addressing transgender rights since returning to office. Past polls have said a majority of Americans do not believe transgender female athletes should compete in women's sports.
3) Slip-sliding away
Part of California is falling into the Pacific Ocean, four inches at a time.
The news: The Palos Verdes Peninsula -- which sits south of Los Angeles and has a population of about 65K -- is experiencing a slow-motion landslide. NASA said the region shifted downslope aibout four inches every week during a four-week study period last fall.
Go deeper: The region has experienced landslides for decades. But this rapid shift is a new phenomenon. Officials said heavy rainfalls in 2023 and 2024 likely spurred the issue, causing the landslide to accelerate and expand.
Big picture: NASA believes the landslide has likely slowed from its fastest pace. But the expanded area includes far more infrastructure and could eventually endanger human life, which obviously concerns scientists and has catalyzed state plans to offer buyouts to impacted property owners and take other measures.
