Tragedy on the Hudson

A fatal helicopter crash killed six people in New York City.

  • The news: A sightseeing chopper went down in the Hudson River. Three adults, including the pilot, and three children perished. Officials said a family of tourists from Spain was on the aircraft.

  • More details: Four people were declared dead at the scene; the other two died after being removed. Eyewitnesses said the helicopter came apart midair, losing a propeller and its tail before plunging nose down.

  • Big picture: There have been a handful of helicopter crashes over Manhattan in recent years, but this one is the most deadly in some time. Five people were killed in a 2018 incident but the pilot survived. Federal officials have launched an investigation into the crash.
