The Top Tip

Staying put

President Trump may not want to take credit for this political comeback.

  • The news: Canada's Liberal Party was projected to win control of the government for a fourth straight term as votes were counted following snap elections. It was not immediately clear if the Liberals won a parliamentary majority, but Prime Minister Mark Carney will remain in office after being appointed earlier this year.

  • Big rally: The Liberals were projected to lose the next national election by as many as 20 points at times last year. And they remained underdogs when embattled ex-PM Justin Trudeau finally stepped down earlier this year. But Trump's "51st state" antagonism and tariff assaults boosted the ruling party while undercutting the Conservative Party and leader Pierre Poilievre, who was in danger of losing his legislative seat just weeks after appearing set to become PM.

  • Big picture: Carney has emerged as a fierce critic of Trump's actions, blasting the president repeatedly. The left-wing New Democratic Party saw its support collapse nationally after propping up Trudeau's government, so the Quebec nationalist Bloc Quebecois could gain sway if the Liberals only reach a minority government.
