1) Bad walk
Hawaii police said a man tried to kill his wife on a scenic hiking trail.
The news: Gerhardt Konig, 46, allegedly tried to push his wife off the trail at Pali Lookout on Oahu on Monday morning, hitting her in the head with a rock. The 36-year-old woman was hospitalized in seriois condition; she was also allegedly beaten by Konig and suffered facial and head injuries.
Apparent motive: Konig reportedly became enraged when his wife refused to take a photo with him. Konig is an anesthesiologist based in Maui; witnesses reportedly told cops he jabbed his wife with at least two syringes.
The manhunt: Honolulu cops apprehended Konig on Monday night after a brief foot chase. He was spotted near the Pali Highway after a bulletin was put out asking for the public's help finding him.
2) Tragic blazes
At least 19 people are dead due to raging wildfires in South Korea.
The news: Wind-driven fires have torn through the country’s southern regions. Over 200 structures have been destroyed by the blazes and 27K people have been forced to evacuate. Over 43K acres have been burned as of last night and 19 people were injured; firefighting helicopters were grounded after one crashed.
Among the wreckage: An ancient Buddhist temple was almost completely destroyed by the fires. Only the 1.3K-year-old Gounsa temple’s ceremonial bell appeared to be somewhat still intact.
Big picture: This could end up being the most devastating wildfire incident in South Korea’s history. Early speculation is the cause of the blazes may be man-made, but not arson — grave clearing or welding are potential origins.
3) Circled wagons
President Donald Trump -- and his administration -- continued to handle the fallout after a journalist was inadvertently included in an encrypted chat discussing military planning.
What happened: Trump offered public support for National Security Adviser Mike Waltz after he, by all accounts, accidentally added Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of The Atlantic, to a Signal group chat discussing U.S. air strikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels. Waltz took responsibility for the mistake. Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were also among the participants in the chat.
The defenses: Trump and members of his cabinet downplayed the matter's national security implications and attacked Goldberg, who has been a long-running target of the president. CIA Director John Ratcliffe and National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, also in the chat, were grilled by lawmakers during Senate testimony. Ratcliffe insisted the chat did not breach security protocols.
Big picture: While Waltz enjoys the president's confidence now, many in and around the White House reportedly believe he will eventually take the fall. Most intelligence and military analysts have said the chat was a national security vulnerability and Goldberg has suggested he could report further details of what he saw in the chat after Hegseth denied providing classified information. Vance could also get heat from Trump for seeming to contradict the president's foreign policy in the chat.
