Annex ambush

A Michigan man was shot dead after opening fire on U.S. Border Patrol in Texas.

  • What happened: A gunman identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, fired dozens of rounds at a Border Patrol sector annex next to McAllen International Airport early Monday morning. An officer was shot; another officer and a Border Patrol suffered injuries. All three are expected to survive. The gunman was killed in the firefight.

  • More details: The firefight is the first fatal assault on a federal border facility this year. Officials say the rapid exchange lasted barely a minute. The airport was closed for several hours.

  • Big picture: The FBI is investigating. No motive was announced, but the gunman reportedly had a reference to the Call of Duty video game series on his vehicle.
