Top Tips

1) Tragedy averted?

Police have identified a suspect in a series of attacks on the Democratic National Committee office in Arizona -- and believe he may have been planning far worse.

  • Catch up: The DNC office in Tempe, also used by Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign in the battleground state, was shot at three separate times in recent weeks. Each incident happened between midnight and 1 a.m. and no one was injured.

  • Arrest made: Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, faces terrorism charges as well as unlawful discharge, shooting at a non-residential structure and criminal damage charges. He also allegedly hung "suspicious bags of white powder from several political signs lined with razor blades" in another town. Cops received a tip based on his vehicle dating back to a 2022 incident involving stolen campaign signs. Kelly is a retired aerospace engineer who previously had a top security clearance, according to his attorney.

  • More details: Maricopa County Prosecutor Neha Bhatia said police found over 200 guns and over 250K rounds of ammunition in Kelly's home. He also had body armor, scopes and silencers. Bhatia said authorities believe he may have been planning a mass casualty event. His cash bond was set at $500K.

2) Big hit

American Airlines will pay a historic fine for violating laws that protect passengers with disabilities.

  • What happened: The company agreed to pay a $50M penalty as part of a settlement with the Department of Transportation. The fine is 25x bigger than the previous high for a disability-related infraction.

  • The findings: A four-year probe determined American “provided unsafe and undignified physical assistance to passengers on a number of occasions that, at times, resulted in injuries,” according to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. The airline mishandled and damaged "thousands" of wheelchairs, according to Buttigieg, and one impacted person interviewed said, "I was made to feel like a piece of luggage, so I do not fly anymore."

  • Big picture: American must spend $25M on significant infrastructure upgrades and work to reduce wheelchair damage incidents. If the airline succeeds, DOT will forgive the remaining $25M. The airline said it has already spent $175M toward improvements. DOT also said it has similar active investigations against other airlines.

3) Eat up

McDonald's vowed its food is safe despite its connection to a recent E. coli outbreak.

  • Catch up: At least 49 people in 10 states, all in the western part of the country, have gotten sick. There has been at least one death and 10 hospitalizations. The contaminations have been tied to the fast-food chain's popular "Quarter Pounder" hamburger.

  • The response: McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger vowed to "restore confidence" and said, "We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics." The Quarter Pounder has been removed from menus in the impacted areas and the chain is cooperating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • Big picture: It is not clear what exactly was contaminated, but McDonald's indicated the burger's slivered onions were likely the issue. If that is the case, the supply source has been identified. Doctors said more illnesses could still emerge, as it takes 3-4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.
