The Top Tip

Talk it out

President Donald Trump said the U.S. and Iran will begin direct talks over Tehran's nuclear program this weekend.

  • What happened: Trump dropped the unexpected news alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. He said the talks will begin Saturday at "almost the highest level." But while Trump claims the nations will directly engage, Iran said they will be indirect talks while confirming they will be at a high level.

  • Catch up: Trump previously pulled the U.S. out of the Iranian nuclear agreement struck by former President BarackObama. He demanded direct talks in a letter to Iran earlier this year and has repeatedly threatened military action if Tehran does not agree to a new deal. Iran has rejected the call for direct talks, but expressed a willingness for indirect ones. Iran is expected to have talks with China and Russia today.

  • Take note: Trump is adamant Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons. He is also not the only world leader who has suggested military action without a new deal; French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said military conflict would be "almost inevitable" without an agreement. And Israel would likely be involved in any pre-emptive strike to take out Iran's capabilities.
